I photographed this ‘die hard’ Pandanus tree in a 30 knot gale last Sunday afternoon. We had ventured up to Double Island Point hoping to find some classic winter waves to surf. The winds were so strong it was pretty much impossible to get onto the large swells wrapping around the rocky point. But this tree grabbed my attention. It will never grow to become a large flourishing Pandanus. It’s root system was firmly planted down into cracks in the volcanic rock, holding on and supporting the small tree so that it stands the test of time in all extremes of weather.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12: 1-2

In a world where common sense, ethics and morality are constantly being undermined, we must know that what we build our lives on is rock solid. Otherwise we will ignorantly conform to whatever fad or fashion comes along. There is a massive move in our decaying western world at the moment to legalise same sex marriage. Yet I read back in Genesis 2 a very clear description of what God calls marriage. He knows what works.

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24

Let the character of Christ be your compass and the absolute truth of His Word be your guide. Stand your ground on what you know to be true, no matter how hard the roar of conformity is raging against you. You will not be popular… just like a stunted Pandanus tree growing out of rock. But you will be standing tomorrow.
